I originally saw Chineasy during a TEDtalk last year and was intrigued. I plan on moving to China soon and have been having trouble learning a significant amount of characters. I immediately preordered it on Amazon and eagerly awaited to download on me kindle. I quickly skimmed through the book and it did have lots of illustrations. My problem is that it's more style than substance.

ShaoLan has put a lot of effort and creativity into her hanzi drawings. Some are a little stretched but as time went by I found it to be more gimmicky than useful in actually learning the characters and the illustrations became too muddled. Having the illustrations next to the hanzi themselves would of gone a long way to retaining. Secondly, a lack of sample sentences is rather annoying. She does through out a few examples near the end of each chapter but they're more random than useful. A lot of the words are fairly awkward or not entirely useful. I wasn't expecting this to be a new grammar and vocabulary builder but it doesn't really seem to hold a lot of learning value.

Overall I think it's a valiant effort but could use some expansions and practicality, especially with the presentation of the words themselves.

I've seen the author's Ted Talk and followed the crowd funding for this book. I really wanted to like it. However, the Kindle version of the book is designed for art, not for functionality (reading).

It is virtually impossible to read on a tablet because of the small print (and inability to increase the size), the colors used (example, dark orchid background for small black font), and the navigation. Tried to read it in the alternative on my computer. No dice.

I've purchased several hundred Kindle books in the past couple of years. This is the first one for which I've requested a refund.

If they fix the electronic version, I'll also remove this Kindle review upon request.

In short, avoid the Kindle version like the plague. The print edition should be fine (knock on wood). If I get the print edition, I'll update this review to address the content.
